Welcome to Silent Book Club's Oakland chapter! We have several meetup options for East Bay readers, and a local Facebook group to connect online.
First Tuesday of the month - Slainte Pub (131 Broadway, Oakland)
We'll kick off introvert happy hour at 7pm with some light chatter and informal book recommendations before settling in to read quietly, but if you'd rather just pull up a chair and read, by all means do so. No one will be shushed or shamed. The bar will be open for happy hour. Seats for up to 30 people have been reserved in the Oscar Wilde room. This is the room that you first walk into when you enter the bar. The book club is scheduled to meet the first Tuesday evening of each month 7pm-9pm.
First Saturday of the month - The New Parkway Theater (474 24th St, Oakland)
We are happy to have found a new home at The New Parkway Theater! Meetings will be on the first Saturday of every month from 4 to 6 p.m. Grab some food and drinks from the theater cafe and head upstairs to the mezzanine. The first meeting is in April - 4/4 at 4pm!
Second Saturday of the month - Temescal Library (5205 Telegraph Ave, Oakland)
Not a drinker? The Temescal Library is hosting their own Silent Book Club on the second Saturday mornings of each month 10:30am-12:30pm. They will have free coffee and can accommodate up to 80 people. They will host the second Saturday morning of each month 10:30am-12:30pm. Please note that the March meeting will be moved to the afternoon. Check with the Temescal Library for more details. Their phone number is 510-597-5049.
There should be a catchy write up here about books, wine, comfy couch and good company but I'm only a reader, not a writer. Fortunately I can provide logistical information.
My co-host, Kati Parker, and I settled on the 3rd Thursday of the month and set up corresponding events here. It would be nice if you RSVP but it isn't a requirement!
No assigned readings, no pressure to finish a book on time or read a book you have no time or inclination to read anyway.
This group is for those who just want to relax and read in the company of other bookish folk. While silence is the main game during the allotted hour, for those so inclined to do so there will be time made to share what you are reading, and discuss all things literary or just get to know one another.
Other activities added to a meet may include a book swap or other literary events. Please feel free to recommend a favorite park, coffee shop, or other favorite reading spot!
