Celebrating Indie Bookstores at SBC

Celebrating Indie Bookstores at SBC

Jazmyn Jackson is the Programs Manager at Silent Book Club, where she helps bring readers together around the world through thoughtful programming and community-building.

April is here, which also means that one of Silent Book Club’s favorite days of the year is right around the corner: Independent Bookstore Day!

Indie Bookstore Day is officially celebrated on April 25th… but what’s a month-long celebration going to hurt? We need more whimsy!

In a world that is increasingly optimized, automated, and algorithmically curated (hello, AI), we find it more important than ever to remember what it feels like to be human. To be playful. To follow curiosity instead of efficiency. To find joy in the smallest, most unnecessary things. We want to encourage others to be a little silly, a little more romantic about life, and a little more free. As book lovers, what better place to do that than an indie bookstore?

Indie bookstores are one of the last spaces where you can wander without being watched and stumble into something life-altering you didn’t even know you were looking for. They are perfectly imperfect with glowing personalities, deeply curated, and full of little surprises — which is exactly what makes them magic

This month at Silent Book Club, we’re going to lean into the whimsy. We’re going to bookstores and actually judging books by their covers. We’re talking to booksellers — the real-life tastemakers of the literary world — no matter how intimidating it might be! We’re fully giving in to the bookstore-to-café pipeline (and we know you know exactly what we’re talking about). We’re getting dressed up for absolutely no reason other than the possibility that we might meet the love of our lives between the shelves.

More than anything, we hope this campaign is an invitation:

Go to a bookstore with no plan.
Pick up something unexpected.
Talk to someone new.
Linger a little longer than you normally would.

Let it be simple. Let it be fun. Let it be yours.

And while you’re at it — support your local indie bookstore. Not just because they’re important (they are), but because they make life feel a little more alive.

We have some fun content planned for this month like curating booklists just because we like the cover, highlighting the tiny, oddly specific details that make indie bookstores so special, and of course, highlighting our SBC Bookstore chapters!

At Silent Book Club, we talk a lot about reading as a personal act — hey, it’s BYOB! But where we read, and how we find books, really matters too.

Indie bookstores specifically create space for discovery and for slowing down. These beautiful spaces allow us to be in community without needing to perform and they remind us that not everything needs to be fast, optimized, or, even make sense. For example, they make us feel like we should leave with five books when we already have twenty on our TBR at home!

In a time where so much of life is lived online, they offer something increasingly rare: real places, with real people, sharing real stories.

So this month, Silent Book Club is encouraging you to find just a little more whimsy in your life, because we need it! If you need a place to start, we’ll catch you at our local indie bookstores.

Reading is an act of resistance

Reading is an act of resistance

Silent Book Club is a values-driven organization that has always stood firm in our beliefs. In the current political climate, it can feel scary to speak out and overwhelming to take action. But as an organization, we want to share where we stand.
