From Atlanta to Anand & Beyond

From Atlanta to Anand & Beyond

One of the most beautiful things about Silent Book Club is the organic ways in which it grows.

Many times, someone discovers a gathering of readers in a cafe, park, bookstore, or some other welcoming third space. They show up not knowing anyone, sit down with a book, and leave feeling a little more connected to the world around them and their local community. And sometimes, that small moment doesn’t stay contained to that curated space.

Sometimes, it travels!

Recently, we heard a story that perfectly captures the quiet ripple effect of Silent Book Club: a story that begins in Atlanta and stretches halfway around the world to Anand, India.

When Kush was planning a visit to Atlanta, he was searching for things to do in the city and came across Silent Book Club Atlanta. He decided to attend a meetup while he was in town. What he didn’t know at the time was that the experience would inspire him to bring the idea back home.

“Something about it instantly resonated with me,” Kush later shared. “The idea of people gathering together just to read quietly — no pressure to talk, no structured discussion — felt incredibly refreshing.”

At the meetup, Kush met Sophia, the organizer of Silent Book Club Atlanta. During their conversation, he shared that the ATL chapter had inspired him to start a chapter of his own in his city of Anand, India. It sparked a beautiful moment between two people brave enough to step out of their comfort zones and become leaders in a space. Both saw a need for something in the world and chose to build it.

“It was an amazing surprise and incredibly humbling to learn that Kush was inspired by the Atlanta SBC chapter to begin his own in Anand,” Sophia shared. “When he spoke about Atlanta being his inspiration, it nearly brought me to tears.”

What began as a simple meetup during a visit became the spark for a new reading community thousands of miles away.

“We like to say this organization is ‘for introverts,’” Sophia says, “but I’ve seen time and time again the amount of awe-inspiring community building that our chapters across the world have been able to foster. We’re more than an introvert happy hour — we’re community builders based on a shared love of reading.”

For Sophia, the realization that her local chapter helped inspire another across the globe was almost impossible to wrap her head around. “In a word, unfathomable,” she said. “I never could have imagined the inspiration this chapter would garner.” And the story doesn’t end here.

Anand isn’t the only global chapter sparked by Silent Book Club Atlanta. During a visit to the city, another reader — Shawn — attended an Atlanta meetup with friends. Inspired by the experience, he returned home and started SBC Cape Town in South Africa. The ripple effect is worldwide.

Atlanta may have been the spark for Anand and Cape Town, but as Sophia points out, the strength of each chapter comes from the care and dedication of the organizers who bring their communities to life.

“Kush and I have stayed in touch since his visit,” Sophia shared. “It’s been amazing to see how excited and involved he is in creating a welcoming SBC experience in his city. The same goes for Shawn in Cape Town — both chapters are thriving because of the thought and care their organizers bring to their communities.”

These communities have already grown in incredible ways.

Kush has been recognized with awards within his city for the work he’s doing to build reading culture and community. What began as a simple experiment quickly turned into something much bigger — 46 readers showed up to the very first Silent Book Club Anand gathering, a moment that confirmed the quiet idea had real energy behind it.

His chapter has even been featured in the news, highlighting the growing movement of people gathering to put down their screens and pick up books together. When reflecting on receiving one of his community recognitions, Kush shared a message that captures the spirit of Silent Book Club perfectly:

“Start small. Start messy. Start anyway. You never know whose life you might change. Including your own.

If you are a cafe owner looking to start a community, feel free to DM me and I'd love to help you get started.”

Meanwhile, Shawn has grown SBC Cape Town into one of the largest chapters in the entire Silent Book Club global community, with more than 41,000 followers and wildly creative meetups. From reading on trains — including an incredible Sunday gathering where 500 people rode public transport together to read and explore Kalk Bay — to hosting gatherings in public parks and even shutting down streets for community reading, the Cape Town chapter continues to push the boundaries of what a reading community can look like.

Some of their most legendary meetups happen during Open Street Sundays, when Bree Street closes to cars and becomes a pedestrian-only space. Readers bring blankets, camping chairs, and cushions, turning the street into a giant outdoor reading room.

Stories like this remind us that Silent Book Club is about so much more than reading quietly together. It’s about creating spaces where people can show up as they are, connect through books, and build community in ways that sometimes reach far beyond what we imagine. A single meetup in Atlanta sparked chapters in India and South Africa, and somewhere out there, someone might be attending their very first SBC meeting — a moment that could spark the next one.

“I truly believe that silence, when shared, can create a powerful sense of community,” Kush says.
