150 Introverts Got Onto a Boat: Metro Detroit’s First River Reading Cruise

150 Introverts Got Onto a Boat: Metro Detroit’s First River Reading Cruise

By Katie Dehn, Host of Berkley SBC in Metro Detroit, Michigan

On May 16, something really special happened in Metro Detroit.

150 readers climbed aboard the Diamond Belle on the Detroit River with books in hand, ready to spend an afternoon reading together. What could have easily felt quiet or awkward instead felt warm, joyful, and deeply connected in the way Silent Book Club gatherings so often do.

People came alone and left having made new friends. There were conversations between chapters that had only known each other through Instagram. There was laughter, sunshine, skyline views, peaceful reading time, and plenty of excitement around prizes donated by local community partners including Blue Hat Coffee, Mother Handsome, and Road Less Traveled Books, all beloved local venues that regularly host Silent Book Club gatherings in Metro Detroit.

VIP attendees also got to sport event merch created by Crooked Monkey, giving them a fun way to remember the day. The cruise itself was hosted aboard Diamond Jack's River Tours, whose team helped create such a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere for the event.

Most of all, there was a genuine sense of community, the kind that grows naturally when people gather around a shared love of books without pressure or expectation. Book people also tend to be naturally empathetic, curious, and thoughtful, and that energy shaped the entire atmosphere of the day. People were kind to one another. Conversations felt easy. Even moments of quiet felt shared and comforting instead of lonely.

The idea for the Metro Detroit River Reading Cruise started back in November when Berkley SBC cohost Katie Dehn had a simple thought: What if we brought readers together on the Detroit River for a shared reading experience? She reached out to a few local chapters to gauge interest, and the excitement spread quickly.

By January, multiple Metro Detroit chapters had joined together to help make it happen. Some hosts brought event planning experience, some were incredible at organizing details, others helped with design, social media, or outreach. Everyone showed up in their own way, united by the desire to create something welcoming and memorable for local readers.

One of the biggest pieces that helped bring the event to life was the support of the Friends of the Grosse Pointe Public Library. Having the partnership and backing of a Friends of the Library organization helped tremendously with logistics, including securing nonprofit status with the cruise line and handling ticketing and payments to vendors. It became another example of how many people and organizations came together behind the scenes to support this shared vision.

What made this event feel so meaningful was how collaborative it became. It never felt like one chapter hosting for everyone else. It felt like a community project built together by people who genuinely care about creating spaces where readers feel comfortable and connected.

When tickets launched on March 16, all 150 spots sold out within five days. FIVE DAYS!

And then on May 16, after months of planning, everyone finally got to see it come to life.

Readers spent the afternoon soaking in river views, reading quietly beside one another, chatting between chapters, and simply enjoying the rare feeling of being surrounded by people who understand the joy of bringing a book everywhere you go.

It felt a little surreal in the best possible way: a boat full of readers floating through Detroit on a sunny afternoon.

For many attendees, it was also a reminder of how much Silent Book Club means beyond just reading time. These groups create friendships. They create belonging. They make it easier to show up exactly as you are, whether you’re social that day or quiet, whether you talk to ten people or simply read beside them.

The Metro Detroit River Reading Cruise was a celebration of that spirit.

A huge thank you to everyone who joined us and helped make our very first cruise feel so welcoming and magical. And an equally huge thank you to all of the hosts, chapters, local businesses, and community partners who collaborated behind the scenes to make the event possible.

If the excitement around this cruise is any indication, we have a feeling this may become an annual tradition.

Host chapters included Berkley, Cozy Vibes, Clarkston, Macomb, Troy, Madison Heights Public Library, and Friends of Grosse Pointe Public Library. Together, these chapters, along with many others helping spread the word, showed just how strong and supportive the Silent Book Club community in Metro Detroit has become.

And the fun isn’t over yet. From June through August, readers will have the chance to visit 22 participating book groups around Metro Detroit as part of a summer of shared reading adventures and community events.

Because sometimes the best experiences start with something simple:
people, books, and a place to gather together quietly.
