Q&A with Author Liane Moriarty

In the latest novel by best-selling author Liane Moriarty, Here One Moment, a seemingly ordinary flight takes an extraordinary turn when a mysterious woman walks down the aisle, predicting the exact time and manner of death for each passenger. While some dismiss her as a charlatan and others are delighted by her prophecies of long lives, the passengers' worlds are irrevocably shaken months later when the first prediction chillingly comes true.
“In Here One Moment, Australian author Liane Moriarty takes readers on a wild ride as passengers deal with love, heartbreak, and careers, all while contemplating whether fate and destiny are real—and whether the outcome can be changed. It’s a captivating book that keeps you reading till the end to find out what happens to the passengers and just who Cherry really is.”

To celebrate the paperback release of the book—just in time for summer reading—we had the pleasure of asking Liane a few questions about her writing inspiration, travel habits, and dream reading escapes.
Silent Book Club: I've read that the idea for Here One Moment came to you while stuck on the tarmac. Are you a nervous flyer?
Liane Moriarty: I’m lucky because I don’t have a fear of flying so for the most part it sparks a feeling of joy. On the other hand Australia is very far away from the rest of the world so plane trips can be very long and exhausting, and the older I get the longer it takes me to recover.
Silent Book Club: So let’s talk packing list. Every reader’s dilemma: how many books do you bring along when you travel? What genres do you gravitate towards?
I normally pack at least three paperbacks, and then buy more at the airport. I enjoy most contemporary fiction, across most genres – from domestic thrillers to historic fiction. Once I finish reading a book, I leave it behind for the next guest at a hotel or Airbnb, and then replenish! It’s not a failsafe system, and I do get panicky when I’m travelling and find myself coming to the final pages of my last book, so I have finally given in and bought an ebook as an emergency back-up.
Silent Book Club: What would be your dream destination for a reading retreat?
Liane Moriarty: It would probably be a snowy mountain retreat – perhaps somewhere like the Austrian retreat in season two of Nine Perfect Strangers! Although without the psychedelic therapy!
Silent Book Club: Cozy cabin reading? YES PLEASE. And it works out perfectly that our summer giveaway in the US corresponds with your winter in Australia. Win-win!
